Description
Carreg Maen Taro is a roughly hewn standing stone that stands 1.7 meters high. It is marked with the letters 'B' and 'M' and is surrounded by a spread of smaller stones. This stone is traditionally believed to mark the site of an ancient battle, although its exact date of erection is uncertain. It is located on the former boundary line between the counties of Brecknockshire and Monmouthshire, which the letters refer to. The 'M' is carved on the south-east side, while the 'B' is on the north side. The letters are in a primitive serifed Roman style, indicating they were likely carved in the 18th or early 19th century. Additionally, the stone marks a geological fault known by the name, which can be translated as "stone of rock striking," suggesting that the standing stone indicates where surface rock meets the fault.
