Description
Boathouse Cottage, which includes a canal wharf, is a three-storey stone house positioned at right angles to the canal, built over the upper end of the tunnel. The slate roof was raised around 1900. The front of the house is rendered and features two modern windows, except for the ground floor, which retains camber-headed sash windows. There is an offset entrance between these windows. The house has gable-end brick chimneys and a cross wing at the rear, along with further modern alterations. Small windows in the gable ends are believed to have been used by the occupant to see up and down the two tramroad inclines, although it is unclear why a wharfinger would need this view. On either side of the tramroad bridge, which now serves as access to the house, were rail-served wharves, of which some evidence remains, though they have been partly converted into a garden.
