Description
The tunnel under the canal, which includes a flight of steps to the east, is a Grade II listed structure. It is oriented northeast to southwest and measures 33.6 meters in total length. The original section is located under the canal at the downhill end, featuring a high stone revetment wall that follows the canal's curve and a round arched entrance made of red sandstone voussoirs set back from the arch. This part of the tunnel is stone-lined with a semi-circular arched roof.
The second phase of the tunnel is similar in design and continues along the same alignment. However, the third phase, which is directly beneath the house, shifts to a more east-west alignment, featuring straight sides and a flat roof that also serves as the floor of the house. There is a culvert located on the southeast side. At the uphill end, the tunnel entrance is situated beneath the gable end of the house and is covered by a cast-iron plate. On the downhill side, a steep flight of stone steps connects the towpath to the tunnel, with one step inscribed with 'B & A C Co' for the Brecon and Abergavenny Canal Company.
