Description
The barn at Upper Cwm Cadarn is a Grade II listed building constructed from rubble stone, with some external plastering at the upper end and a slate roof featuring crested red tiles. It consists of five bays, with a central threshing floor. The uphill end was likely a granary, as it was formerly floored and had plastered walls. There are blocked doors on each side of the second bay from the upper end. The west side has pitching doors that have also been blocked due to alterations when the floor was removed to extend the barn. A high-level door is located at the south end gable, which was probably the main access point. The lower end of the barn features two tiers of slit vents, while the gable end has four tiers and a central pitching door. Additionally, the cartway on the northeast side has been extended later to create a short porch with a raking roof.
Inside, the upper end has a full truss with a half-chamfered tie at floor level, and the upper part is framed for a door between the upper and second bays. Other trusses include a tie beam and collar that support raking struts leading to the principal rafters, along with two tiers of trenched purlins.
