Description

Henllys Vale Colliery Limekilns is a bank of four limekilns built into the hillside, constructed from coursed rubble limestone with brick drawing arches. This bank is notably large, standing about 10 meters high, and is well preserved. It appears to have been built in two parts, with the northern half seeming older. This section is heavily battered and features a raised band along with two drawing arches of different heights. There is a blocked arch to the right that does not seem to relate to any kiln, while the upper northern end is significantly eroded. To the south, slightly set back, the later pair of kilns has more vertical walls and lacks a raised band. This pair also includes two drawing arches at the front, but the left kiln has drawing arches from both the front and the side.

The kilns contain impressively tall crucibles, mostly circular and lined with brick, accessed by brick-arched tunnels of varying lengths from the front. The most southerly kiln features a square free-standing inner lining at ground level with arches to the north and south, and a small arch to the east, likely to provide greater access, although the space between the lining and bedrock is very constricted in some areas. The bricks of this inner lining are coved out to meet the main shaft walls. The second kiln reveals more bedrock and rubble stone in the crucible, which is partly octagonal. The northern pair of kilns has longer brick-vaulted entry passages, with the left one measuring about 5 meters, while the right one runs diagonally southwest for approximately 7 meters, featuring a skew-arch at the front.
