Description

The Former Provision Market, now the premises of Brockington & Scott Ltd, is a single-storey building constructed from coursed, squared rubble masonry. It features a sunk panelled parapet with a niche for a tablet above the central doorway, along with a string course. The entrance is framed by a red sandstone doorcase, which includes a moulded label over a depressed arched doorway, a keystone, and stressed spandrels. There are iron double gates at the entrance.

Flanking the entrance are two round arched windows, which are partially blocked, and an impost band. To the right, there are further arched recesses in an advanced bay, which includes a modern doorway, and a narrower round arched recess at the extreme right that has an inset VR letter-box. The advanced bay to the left has been altered by a later fire station doorway, while a narrow round arched recess is located at the extreme left.

The New Road elevation displays similar architectural details, including a sunk panelled parapet and a string course. The advanced centre bay features a lugged architrave to the doorway, with a stone staircase leading to the street. This bay is flanked by part blocked round arched windows and an impost band. The advanced bays beyond also have similar features, with narrower shallow round arched recesses at the extreme left and right.

The later rear portion of the building shows an inferior masonry technique with stressed quoins. It has a blocked cambered brick arch facing New Road and an eight-window elevation at the rear, which includes 20th-century steel framed windows.
