Description

1 Spring Gardens is an end-terrace house that was originally part of a row of four, now converted into flats. The houses were either rendered or made of whitewashed rubble, featuring a slate gabled roof and end stacks. The building is two storeys high with an attic and a basement, originally designed with a three-window range and a central door. However, the fourth house was altered in the 19th century to become Nos 4 and 5, resulting in the loss of the central window and door. Originally, the houses had small-paned 12-pane sash windows and thin sill-courses.

As of 1981, No 1 was made of whitewashed rubble but has since been roughcast. At that time, it had glazing bars on only one window. By 2002, all windows were replaced with 12-pane sashes, although the right end stack was missing. The entrance features a later 20th-century half-glazed timber door, which replaced a 4-panel door noted in 1981, and includes an overlight and a narrow glazed panel to the left. The first-floor sill band has been altered for the first-floor sills. The roof has three evenly spaced flush Velux lights. To the right, there is a single-storey projecting 20th-century extension, roughcast with a slate roof, which includes a half-glazed timber door and a casement window. The rear elevation is made of whitewashed rubble stone.

The interior has been completely altered, including a new staircase. Previously, it was noted for having exposed ceiling joists on the ground floor, an 18th-century staircase, and six-panel doors with fielded panels.
