Description

Barclay's Bank is a bank building from around 1870, constructed in grey rock-faced rubble stone with Bath stone dressings, topped with a slate roof and featuring end stacks. The building has a large three-storey facade with six windows, designed in a mixed Italianate style. It includes a moulded ashlar plinth, a band on the first floor, a plain band on the second floor, and a dentilled cornice supported by paired cym-moulded brackets between the window heads. There are flush sill bands throughout.

On the ground floor, there are doors on each side and four windows in between, all set within raised channelled surrounds that are arched over the windows and slightly pointed at the extrados, featuring triple keystones. The windows have bracketed sills, with two having been raised, and all are fitted with modern glazing. The doorways are tall with modern doors and plain fanlights, while the doorcases have ashlar panelled spandrels above, under a cornice that projects from the first floor band.

The first floor features margin glazed sash windows set in ashlar surrounds, each with segmental-arched cornices and window heads that are cut away in a similar arch, but with a heavy scrolled keystone. The jambs of these windows have raised blocks at the base, mid-height, and top, with raised sills on plain blocks. The second floor has smaller sash windows that are similar to those on the first floor, with matching sills and jambs, and chamfering at the back of the window heads, but here the keystone is flush. The window heads have a shallow pointed upper part that reaches through the base of the entablature to the base of the dentilled cornice.
