Description
The Old Vicarage is a parsonage built in the Gothic style, constructed from lightly rock-faced local masonry arranged in irregular courses, topped with a slate roof. The masonry quoins are made of larger blocks of similar stone that have a pecked finish. The dressings around the doors and windows, as well as two crosses set into the masonry, are made from oolitic limestone. The roof features red ridge and hip tiles, with crested ridges, and there are brick chimneys.
The main block has a three-window range facing east towards the garden and includes a large double-roofed rear wing. On the north elevation, the side of the rear wing is set back, and the entrance is located in a small two-storey extruded corner block.
The main elevation facing the garden features two four-light windows and one three-light window on the ground floor, along with two windows in through-eaves dormers above—one with two lights and the other with three. The ground floor windows have deep lintels with sloping tops and relieving arches above, while the upper windows have flat lintels. A Calvary-type cross is carved in a rectangular outline with sloping sides at the top.
The entrance elevation on the north side includes a restored oriel window of light construction in the gable of the main block, a two-light window above the entrance door in the gabled porch block, and a single-light window on the ground floor of the rear wing. The doorway is topped by a simple equilateral arch with a chamfer, and above the door is a cross incised in a circle. The rear wing elevation features two or three-light mullion windows and hipped gables, with a roughcast gable on the south elevation that includes a 20th-century first-floor window.
The interior layout is based on a long central corridor, with the reception rooms located on the garden side. There are plain stairs at the south end and attic rooms in the south roof span of the rear wing. The property includes good cast-iron grates throughout and original shelf fittings in the library located in the northeast corner.
