Description
Zion English Presbyterian Chapel is a chapel with a stuccoed front elevation dating from 1850. The building features a high plinth and paired outer pilasters that support a full entablature, which includes a blocking course and a minimal central pediment with a small inset semi-circular window. The frieze displays raised letters that read "Zion Chapel 1850."
On the first floor, there is a central window consisting of three arched lights, with the center light being slightly taller and wider. This window is flanked by pilasters and unmoulded arches, with the center pilasters being wider. A moulded sill course with small brackets supports each pilaster. The ground floor has a central doorway with a moulded architrave, flanked by thin panelled piers above the plinth and beneath scrolled consoles that support a moulded cornice. The double doors consist of one long arched panel each. On either side of the door, there are arched windows with thin raised surrounds. The windows feature narrow marginal panes and an inner band of narrow panes.
The side elevations are two stories high and consist of three bays with pebbledash cladding. The upper section has arched windows, while the lower section has square-headed windows, both with similar glazing bars. A single-storey schoolroom is located at the rear.
Inside, the chapel has a plain plastered interior with a later 19th-century end gallery that is no longer accessible, located over the lobby entry. The ceiling features a coved cornice with dentils in panels surrounding a main panel. The painted grained pews, which have doors, are arranged in three blocks, with the two outer blocks facing inward. The pulpit and set fawr area were altered around 2000 when an organ was installed. The organ is housed in a Gothic case within an arched recess, framed by bead-moulding and lowered by a crescent-shaped insert on corbels.
The end gallery has an attractive front with two rectangular panels beneath each long, pierced narrow cast-iron panel, with each pair divided by a panelled pilaster. The gallery consists of four bays overall, with a clock placed between the pilasters. Below is a deep moulded cornice with modillions and consoles under the pilasters. The panels feature applied late 19th-century urn and scroll embossed decoration, while the cast-iron has a scroll pattern. The entrance lobby has double doors on the left and right, topped with overlights and featuring an inset hexagonal lantern, which is a similar feature found at Heol Awst chapel.
