Description

Llandingat House is a large, three-storey house, likely dating from the 18th century, with substantial later alterations and a more recent extension. The exterior is painted roughcast with a slate hipped roof and deep eaves featuring Greek Revival mutules. It has a U-plan, with a symmetrical three-bay front and sides. The windows are primarily 12-pane sashes on the main floors, with 9-pane sashes on the top floor, all replaced in the 20th century with a slightly different moulding profile. Painted stone sills are present. A plinth runs along the front elevation. The central entrance is accessed via semi-circular stone steps leading to a porch comprised of two large Roman Doric columns supporting a five-sided entablature with a cornice and metal-clad frieze. The porch itself appears to have been altered. To the east, the ground floor has two long windows; one is blank and the other has been altered with casement and top-light glazing. A basement door is situated on the extreme right, but lacks a plinth. The west side features windows with 12 panes on the top and first floors, and a ground-floor centre window alongside a 20th-century door with a 10-pane overlight. The rear of the house has a recessed centre dominated by a massive side wall chimney with arched panels and 17 chimney pots. A lean-to roof covers the stairwell recess, which contains a long arched stair light, and a 20th-century ground floor addition is present. A left wing extends one window in width to the north, while the right wing is largely obscured by a large, 20th-century three-storey rear addition for Llandovery College, although it retains a one-window range in its eastern return. A single-storey hipped outbuilding is attached to the northwest.

The entrance hall retains a moulded reeded ceiling border and features two six-panel doors with planted mouldings in their panels, set within reeded surrounds and adorned with lion mask corner blocks. A southwest room has a fine acanthus cornice and a vine ceiling border with square flowers at the corners. Deep skirting boards and panelled shutters are also present, however a 20th-century fireplace has been installed on the rear wall alongside an arch with a reeded surround and panelled soffit. The southeast room was not accessible during the survey, but includes panelled shutters. A fine semi-circular, curved cantilevered stone staircase with stick balusters and a scrolled rail on an iron post runs to the centre rear, illuminated by an arched stair light with a reeded arch. The stair hall has a reeded cornice, partly damaged, and a partly boarded landing. Arches flank the stair hall; one is blank, while the other has a 20th-century door within a reeded surround with lion masks. Two six-panel doors with lion masks to their surrounds are located in the northwest corner.

The first-floor landing features a panelled soffit and a spine corridor leading to the principal rooms at the front. The centre room has two fluted doorcases with square corner blocks and six-panel doors, with a fireplace positioned between them and a reeded cornice overhead. An eastern room features three similar doors and matching window surrounds. A southeast bathroom has a moulded ceiling border with corner rosettes and a similar six-panel door. A corner staircase in the southwest leads to the attic.

The attic contains a spine corridor, and the rooms include panelled shutters, simple moulded doorcases, and simple 19th-century fireplaces with shelves on brackets. Most of the doors have been replaced, though a single six-panel door remains in a southwest room.
