Description

The former laundry block at Saint David's Hospital is a single-storey building constructed from rock-faced square sandstone, featuring painted Bath stone dressings. It has a rectangular plan with a front range, two parallel ranges behind, and a cross-range at the rear. The building stands on a high plinth and has cambered-headed windows set in flush rusticated surrounds with keystones and flush sills, generally featuring 12-pane windows.

The front range has a roof with louvred gablets over hips at each end and a metal centre ventilator. It consists of five bays, with a central door that has an overlight matching the window heads, all beneath a corniced stone hood supported by brackets, although the door has been altered. The left end features a hipped porch angled towards the rear west range, with a broad opening that has shouldered heads leading to ashlar jambs. A similar opening is found on the west side. The right porch mirrors this design but has a 2-bay south side, a 3-bay east side, and a 2-bay north side, wrapping around the east end of the front range.

On the west side, there is a gable to the right of the porch, followed by five bays with four similar windows and a large external chimney in the centre, which has slate-roofed canted sides, each with a small window. The gable window is larger but similar to the others. The east range features two long 3-light dormers with flat roofs and four windows, followed by a 5-bay range that steps slightly forward, with a roundel over two windows at the south end and four windows on the east side, topped by a gabled centre with a lunette over a door and window.

The north cross range has two ventilators on the ridge. There are steps leading up to a large chamfered south doorway that is at right angles to the west range. To the left, there is a projecting gable with a 3-light lunette. The west gable end of the main range also has a similar lunette above three windows. The north side features twin gabled projections and then the cross-range with an east roundel across the north end of the east range.

The interior was not available for inspection at the time of the resurvey.
