Description

The dam above the Raby Furnace is constructed from masonry similar to that of the furnace itself. It likely created a pool that provided water power for operating the furnace's bellows. On the south face of the dam, there are several arched openings near the east bank, along with a high-level tunnel. Currently, water is released through a modern spillway into an old culvert.

Water was probably drawn from the pool using a sluice and directed at high level to a waterwheel that powered the furnace's bellows. The culvert that now carries the entire stream from the dam past the furnace has been excavated and appears to date from the same period as the furnace.
