Description

Pantyffynnon Station is a mid-19th century railway station designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It is built from squared rubble stone with tooled stone dressings and features a deeply overhanging hipped roof made of corrugated iron. The station is a single-storey structure with a near-symmetrical east front, where the roof extends out as a canopy supported by seven shaped brackets. The façade includes a tooled stone plinth, flush quoins, and a raised impost band.

The central section of the building is slightly advanced and features stone brackets that extend sideways to support the canopy brackets. It has tooled stone piers leading up to the impost band and a plain arch above the doorway, which is topped with a three-light fanlight. There are arched windows on either side of the central door, each containing a pair of casement windows and plain fanlights. The left window has a later door inserted to its left.

The end bays of the station are uneven; the short northern end bay has been rebuilt in the early 20th century, retaining only the plinth and canopy, and is finished in roughcast with purple brick dressings. It has one window in its original position and an additional door to the left. The southern end features an arched door and window similar in detail to those in the central part, but narrower, with the door originally being a window. The south end wall has short brackets supporting the eaves.

The rear west side is quite similar to the front, with one arched window in the left end bay. The central door has been altered to a window, and the right-hand bay, although refaced in roughcast, retains an original arched window. There is a roughcast and brick addition to the right, which includes a window at the northern end, along with a blocked door and window.
