Description

Capel Soar is a nonconformist chapel, largely dating to 1740, with substantial additions and alterations in 1786 and 1836. The chapel is constructed of roughcast with stucco dressings and has a slate eaves roof. It features an early 20th-century ridge ventilator, a broad colourwashed gable front with bargeboards and finial, and a plinth with rusticated quoins. The front facade has two tall, narrow, arch-headed windows with rusticated jambs, moulded arches, and 20th-century glazing. A 20th-century centre entrance has double doors, a Y-tracery fanlight, matching jambs and arch, corbel stops to the arches, and keystones. A moulded course runs below the gable, and a keyed roundel plaque in the gable reads, “Trefnyddion Calfinaidd Adeiladwyd 1740, 1786, MDCCCXXXVI, Soar.” The sides of the chapel have similar single windows, and the rear has two tall windows.

Inside, a three-sided gallery with curved corners is supported by seven fluted columns with leaf capitals. The gallery front has horizontal panels and features a clock by J. Hopkins, Llandovery. The gallery front displays painted graining in three different colours. A plain pulpit with steps on either side is present, along with painted grained pews and a boarded, panelled ceiling.
