Description
The Priory Inn, which includes three properties formerly known as Priory Farmhouse and The Steps above Priory Farmhouse, is a building of historical significance dating back to the medieval period. It is constructed of rubble stone with slate roofs and features an L-plan main building with later additions at each end. The building has two storeys.
The western section has a stone stack at the west end and an outside stone staircase on the south front leading to a first-floor door situated between raised piers that were part of a former pent porch. There is a small sash window on each side of the door. The eastern section has rough masonry and a small outside stack that is corbelled out from the first floor, with two first-floor sash windows positioned beyond it, above a door and window. The roof ridge reveals part of the south gable of a rear wing, which features a narrow apex moulded stone lancet that appears to be medieval. This rear wing is short and has an outside stack at the north end, which is also corbelled out from above the ground floor, showing signs that the gable has been rebuilt. This section contains a medieval stone vault.
Later additions to the building include a single-storey range at the west end and a low two-storey section at the east end, which is double fronted with unaligned windows and a stack at the northeast corner. All windows were renewed during a restoration in 1985, featuring new stone voussoirs and new sills, with door heads also similarly renewed.
The west end features stone jambs of a large fireplace with an arch above that dates to the 1985 restoration. The central rear vaulted room has a rough stone vault that is similar to those found in The Steps.
