Description
The Steps, which includes the property formerly known as Brook Villa, is a Grade II* listed building that dates back to the medieval period and the 18th century. It is built into the remains of the monastic buildings of the former Pill Priory, founded around 1200. The structure is made of rubble stone and features a slate roof with a small stack at the west end.
The building has two storeys, with the lower storey being thicker and containing two parallel rough stone medieval vaults. The upper storey appears to have been added later. The south front has a door flanked by a window on each side, all featuring 20th-century lintels. To the left, there is a large flight of stone steps leading up to a door for the upper loft. The upper floor includes a 4-pane sash window to the left of the centre and a small light to the right. The masonry at the right corner projects slightly, suggesting it may be of medieval origin.
The east end wall displays a broad relieving arch at the end of the interior vault, with one window on each floor. The west end has a lean-to addition. The north wall features a northeast rear wing that terminates in a large section of medieval masonry, which may have been the former south transept of the priory. This section includes a tall off-centre lancet window on the north face, while the south side has a cambered arch and indications of a former gable, making it unclear which side was originally internal.
Inside, there are two parallel stone vaults, one broader to the south and one narrower to the north.
