Description
Carew Bridge is a Grade II* listed structure featuring three arches and a long causeway approach at each end. The causeways have a battered face on the downstream side (west) and part of the upstream side. The carriageway is approximately 4.5 meters wide between the parapets, which widen at each end. The west parapet extends for about 50 meters along the north bank of the downstream pond.
The bridge's arches are located in the central section and are separated by two cutwaters that also serve as pedestrian refuges. Each arch has a span of about 3 meters and is segmental in shape, constructed with deep thin voussoirs. The center arch rises about 0.3 meters higher than the outer arches. The bridge is built from coursed limestone rubble, with the cutwaters and voussoirs being hammer-dressed, while the parapet is made of random rubble topped with large flat copings.
