Description
Nos. 6 to 9 Picton Terrace is a group of 18th-century terraced houses that were originally five or six cottages, as shown on a 1750 estate map. The eaves at the front were previously about 0.5 meters lower than they are now, and after the roof was reconstructed, large 19th-century windows were added to the upper storeys of nos. 6, 7, and 8. The original lower roof level can still be seen on the west gable.
No. 6 is made up of two cottages that were originally single-fronted. No. 7 appears to have been double-fronted from the start. The rough-cast render on no. 8 hides its original structure, and alterations to no. 9 also obscure its original form, although their widths suggest they were single-fronted. Local tradition mentions that there were pigsties in the forecourts of these cottages.
Today, the terrace consists of four houses built from rubble masonry with a slate roof, featuring tile ridges and brick end stacks. Each house is two storeys high with a two-window range. The exterior is roughly rendered and whitened. The upper windows are four-pane horned sashes set in recessed and exposed frames, while the lower windows are similar but smaller. There is a modern door in an original opening to the right of centre, along with the mark of a blocked doorway to the left of centre.
