Description
The Church of Saint David has medieval origins and was rebuilt in 1812 and again from 1886 to 1887 by H. Prothero of Middleton, Prothero and Philott of Cheltenham. It is a small and low structure built of rubble stone with Doulting stone dressings and slate roofs. The church features a nave and chancel, a bellcote, and a north porch and vestry added in 1887. The gables are coped and shouldered. The west end has a large central buttress with a moulded plinth and coping from 1887, along with a gabled bellcote that has two arched openings. The north porch has a coped gable, a Tudor-arched entry, and a plaque from 1887.
The nave has a three-light flat-headed window in the Perpendicular style, while the south side of the nave has two similar four-light windows, and the south side of the chancel has a three-light window. The chancel features a two-light east window that is flat-headed with ornate reticulated tracery, and there is a north vestry. Two slate plaques are set into the south walls, one dated 1815 and the other 1808.
Inside, there is 20th-century roughcast cladding and a plain chancel arch. The roofs have plain wishbone trusses that were reused from the previous church. The fittings, all from 1887, include pews, a panelled oak pulpit, tiled floors with encaustic tiles in the chancel, two high-backed chancel stalls donated by the architect H. Prothero, and a lectern. The church also contains a medieval square font with bead moulding on the angles and slightly rounded lower corners, supported by a circular short shaft. There is no stained glass present.
