Description

Paterchurch Tower is a Grade I listed, three-storey tower built from rubble stone. It features an embattled design with a castellated parapet and a taller rounded stair tower on the northeast side. The south front includes a blocked chamfered pointed entry with heavy corbelling above, a blocked camber-headed opening on the first floor, and a plain window on the second floor. There is a loop under the parapet. The west side has a loop at both the ground and first floors, a blocked square opening on the second floor with voussoirs, and two drainage gutters above. The east side features a loop, plain windows on the first and second floors, and two drainage gutters. The northeast tower is supported by stepped buttressing on the north and east sides, with rounded masonry in between and two small lights. To the west of the north buttress is a short wall section with a pointed arched doorway aligned with the main pointed doorway on the north side, and to the left is an east door leading into the tower stair. The north side has a plain window on the first floor with traces of a gable above, and a loop above on the second floor.

Inside, each floor has a vaulted chamber. The ground floor features square section ribs, with four ribs extending from the corners and four leading to the ridges, all meeting at an octagonal boss. There is a segmental arch leading to a blocked doorway on the south side. The vaults on the two upper floors are plastered, with the first floor having a rounded vault and the second floor featuring a pointed vault, the crown of which rises behind the parapets at the top of the tower. The first floor also includes a narrow corner flue on the southwest side.
