Description

1 The Terrace is a 19th-century building constructed from squared tooled limestone, topped with a slate hipped roof that is concealed behind a parapet and features a stone stack. The structure consists of a basement and three stories, arranged in a four-window range, with a cornice and low parapet. It has a plinth and a sill band at the first floor level. The upper windows are square, with two 8-pane windows that are 20th-century replacements at the second window and a 6-pane window at the fourth. The first floor has 12-pane windows, and the ground floor features recessed arched openings with flush voussoirs. The surgeon's house section includes 6-pane arched-headed sash windows on either side of double 3-panel doors that have a plain fanlight above. There is a similar window behind bars to the right, which is part of the police station. Semicircular grilles are present in front of the basement windows. The western end, above a separately listed lodge, has two 6-pane windows and one 9-pane window on the upper floor, along with one 20th-century window and two 12-pane sashes on the first floor. The eastern end displays similar architectural details to the front but has a basement area with steps leading down and blank windows in the outer bays above.
