Description

Albro Castle is a Grade II* listed building consisting of an extensive grouping of structures arranged in three parallel ranges connected by a central spine range, creating four open-ended courtyards. At the intersection of these ranges is a single observation room, which features windows set at canted angles. The building is two storeys high, constructed from brown rubble stone with roofs covered in small slates, and is adorned with a series of red brick Tudor-style chimneys. The windows are long, small-paned casement pairs, with top-lights on the ground floor, and are framed by cambered cut stone voussoirs, bevelled reveals, and slate sills.

The front range is more formal, built from blue lias ashlar, and features a two-storey, six-window main range with single-storey, three-window wings. The main range has a central projection of two bays with gables that include incised cross loops. It also has a raised band and a high plinth. The ground floor center contains two Tudor-arched doorways with ledged doors and one window between them. The single-storey wings have narrow single-light windows and plain doors.

Behind the front range, two courtyards are separated by a five-window spine range, which has canted one-window angles and six-window wings. At the east end of the east wing are unaltered vagrant cells from 1884, still featuring grading grilles and chutes for breaking stone. The two courtyards behind the central range were divided by a single-storey bakehouse range, which became roofless in 1991, connecting to the rear range. This rear range includes part of the original structure, a short two-storey central range, and a single-storey east wing, with the two-storey west wing being of late 19th century or early 20th century construction.

The rooms within the principal area are large and well-lit from both sides, featuring stone access stairs, and the overall structure remains remarkably little altered from its original design.
