Description
The Serjeants Inn and Court House is a building constructed from whitewashed rubble stone, featuring close-eaved slate roofs and three rebuilt brick chimneys. It is two storeys high and has a five-window range, arranged with three windows on the right and two on the left, with a chimney positioned between the sections. There is a one-window lower addition at the left end. All windows are boarded over as of 1997, with stuccoed surrounds on the first floor. The ground floor has a continuous slate pent-roof that reaches the first-floor sill level, except at the extreme right end, where a small stretch of drip-course is visible. Six timber brackets support the roof.
On the ground floor, there are three canted bay windows, one on each side of the door in the right section, featuring 8-16-8-pane sashes. To the left of the door in the left section, there is one window with 8-12-8-pane casements and a central fixed light. These windows have corniced flat tops, slate sills, and stone bases. The doors have plain stucco surrounds, with the main door featuring an oak lintel over a stable door with panels, while the left door is an earlier 20th-century half-glazed design. The added section to the left has one boarded-over window above and two casement-pair windows below.
At the rear, there is an outshut with a large rear wing that is central to the three-window section. This wing has a stack on the east side wall face and altered windows on two floors, along with a single-storey addition at the north end of the rear wing.
Attached to the northeast end of the inn is the former court-house, built in 1877 from Cilgerran stone and topped with a slate roof. It features a door and a large window facing the road, with a ledged door and overlight that has a brick head, previously covered by a timber slated hood. The window once had a large canted bay that projected outward with small-paned glazing, but both the hood and bay were demolished in a road accident in 1996. There is also an arched window in the end wall with metal tracery, possibly part of alterations made in 1932, and a lean-to addition at the rear.
The interior was not accessible in 1997, but in 1987, it was noted to have chamfered cross beams in the ground floor bar, chamfered lintels over the fireplaces, a panelled entrance hall, and a dog-leg staircase, among other features.
