Description

The Bennett's Navy Tavern is an inn, dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of colourwashed roughcast with stucco dressings and has slate roofs. The main part of the building is two storeys high and has three bays, with stacks at each end. The left stack is of rubble stone, while the right stack is roughcast. To the left is a lower, single-window range, and further to the left, a service range. The window and door surrounds are stuccoed and feature broad sills below the first-floor windows. There are three 12-pane sash windows on the first floor, set within eared surrounds, and one similar window on the ground floor to the right. The house door, slightly right of centre, is a 6-panel door with 4 fielded panels and an overlight. All window and door surrounds have keystones. To the left of the main entrance is a finer, earlier 19th-century double shopfront, featuring 16-pane bow-windows flanking a doorway with double, half-glazed doors and an overlight, all within a casing of pilasters and a cornice. Steps lead to the cellar to the right, enclosed by a 19th-century iron gate and railings with scrolled finials; the gate has dog bars. A lower service wing is located to the left, with a 6-pane sash window above a 16-pane sash, and the first-floor band continues across. A small stone and brick stack is at the left end. At the rear, a cross-wing extends from the main house, with a slate-hung southwest wall, and includes sash windows with glazing bars on the first floor of both the northeast and southwest elevations.
