Description
Kilgetty Colliery Chimney Base is a structure dating from the colliery's operational period. The chimney base is approximately 2.5 meters square on the outside and 1.25 meters square on the inside, rising to a height of about 4.5 meters above the yard's ground level. It is constructed from rubble sandstone with dressed quoins, resembling the style of the weighbridge office. The chimney tapers slightly for the first 3 meters, after which the taper becomes gentler. The upper parts of the chimney are roughly broken and covered in ivy.
There are two arched openings at the base of the chimney. The northern opening connects to a firebrick flue that extends several meters along the eastern bank of the yard, although the nearside wall and the arched top of the flue are missing. The internal height of the flue is about 1 meter above the current ground level, suggesting this may have been the site of a boiler house. The second opening faces west, positioned above where the main flue connects. This aperture measures 0.6 meters wide by 0.8 meters high and features a hinged iron access cover for servicing the chimney.
The chimney is included for its group value with the remaining engine house and weighbridge house.
