Description

The Casting House is a nearly square building dating from the 19th century. It measures 22 meters in length from east to west and 23 meters in span. The structure is located immediately east of two furnaces, with its rear fully open towards them. The eastern face features a striking segmental gable that reaches its full height, and the building is architecturally symmetrical. Constructed from local sandstone, the masonry is nearly complete, with all dressings made of limestone.

The front (eastern) wall has three large ventilation openings. It also includes three archways supported by internal buttresses at the jambs, with voussoirs featuring stressed imposts and keystones. Above these archways is a symmetrical arrangement of three large circular ventilation holes, also with stressed voussoirs. Between the archways are arch-headed recesses in the walls, measuring about 2 meters high and 50 centimeters wide.

Both side walls are intact to their full height. The southern wall is complete, while the northern wall has been slightly cut back at its western end. Each side features two large openings arranged symmetrically, with the eastern opening positioned slightly higher than the western one. The walls are thickened at the archway locations, and there is a buttress between the archways.

Currently, the shed is roofless, but it was originally covered with five or six structural bays. Some remnants of truss tie rods with turnbuckles can still be seen fixed in the heads of the walls. The existing paving inside the building has obscured any internal features, such as plant or column bases or machinery pits, making it difficult to determine the locations of the cupolas or the reverberatory furnace.
