Description

No 23 Hill Street is an end-terrace house dating from the 20th century, featuring painted stucco and a modern imitation-slate mansard roof with flat eaves and no chimneys. The building consists of a basement, three storeys, and an attic. The modern attic replaces a cemented slate hipped roof that previously overhung at the eaves and includes four tall 20th-century dormers with boarded gables and 4-pane sash windows.

The front facade has a four-window range of sashes, with long six-pane sashes on the top and first floors, and a 4-pane horned sash on the ground floor to the left. The sash window frames are reeded with tiny roundels in the top corners. There is a recessed door with an overlight in the second bay, and to the right, a large late 19th-century canted bay window features plate glass sashes, turned angle shafts, and a moulded cornice. The front door is a six-panel design with the upper four panels fielded, and there is a stone front step with a bootscraper. The rendered gable-end has been rebuilt and includes two 20th-century 4-pane sashes.

At the rear, the three-storey elevation has three large 20th-century dormers, with four-pane sashes on the left and right, and a central stair-light. There is a later 19th-century canted bay window on the ground floor to the left. A short two-storey link connects the house to a former coach-house in Horns Lane at the rear right.

The front of the property is adorned with wrought-iron railings on tooled stone coping, positioned on either side of the front door, featuring small pointed finials. The interior has not been inspected, but it was reported in 1974 to have a barrel vaulted cellar and fielded panelled doors, along with panelled shutters in the front left room.
