Description
Rafel is a house built of rubble stone with a slate roof, dating from the 19th century. It stands two storeys high and has a double-fronted design that is offset to the left. The house features a large stone chimney at the right end and a smaller stone chimney at the left end. On the upper floor, there are two 9-pane casements located under the eaves, while the ground floor has four-pane horned sash windows with timber lintels, flanking a late 19th-century porch that is enclosed with slate.
The porch is constructed from slate slabs and has a moulded pediment, with the tympanum displaying an elongated quatrefoil panel inscribed with the initials JWB. The sides of the porch and the front piers that flank the 4-panel door are made of large slate sheets with incised rustication. The house also features slate sills. On the ground floor, to the extreme right, there is a small 4-pane fireplace window with a slate lintel. The left end wall is whitewashed rubble and has one window on the ground floor of the rear outshut, which itself has a single square window in the center.
Attached to the right of the house is an altered former byre made of white-painted stone, topped with a 20th-century slate roof. This structure includes two windows, a door, another window, a narrow light, and an infilled cart-entry. The south end of the byre has outside steps leading to a loft door.
The interior has not been inspected but is reported to contain a large fireplace with a timber lintel at the south end, a winding staircase to the left, and beamed ceilings.
