Description
4 High Street is a former hotel that has been converted into flats. The building features a painted stucco street elevation that rises four and a half storeys, topped with a slate close-eaved roof and red brick stacks at the ends. The roof is adorned with crested ridge tiles. The facade is divided into three bays, with small plate-glass sash windows in the attic that break the eaves beneath gables, which have late 20th-century bargeboards and terracotta finials.
The outer bays have three-storey canted oriel windows on the first to third floors, showcasing large sashes with a 2-4-2 pane configuration and moulded cornices that include dentils. The middle bay features a 4-pane sash window on the upper floors, with moulded surrounds and keystones on the second and third floor windows, and a triangular pediment above the first-floor window.
The ground floor has been altered since 1977; it has lost its central doorway, which originally had pilasters and a segmental cornice, along with a three-light window on either side. Currently, there are recessed 20th-century plate glass shop entries on the left and right of a fixed plate glass centre window, with minimal stucco framing around the outer shop windows. The rear of the building has been extended towards Upper Frog Street.
