Description
Hendre is a large farmhouse dating from the mid-19th century, constructed from squared rubble stone. It features a broad slate hipped roof with a single long roughcast central stack and bracketed eaves. The building has a near square plan with a northwest rear wing. The two-storey front has three windows, each with large segmental-arched sashes that include marginal glazing bars, slate sills, and small stone voussoirs. The jambs are also made of similar small stones. The central doorway is segmental-arched and features a heavily moulded four-panel door, with the upper panels arched and each arch subdivided into two smaller arches with a central pendant. Above the door is a segmental-arched overlight.
On the east side, there are two windows, with the lower ones having yellow-brick jambs, and one window is part-blocked. The rear of the house has a large central stair-light and to the left, there is a projecting short tower that carries an iron water tank. The west side has one upper window, and the northwest angle is chamfered with one similar window on each floor. The rear wing includes a brick ridge stack and a hipped north end, with a lean-to at the back and a two-storey, three-window west front that has a door located between the left and centre windows. The windows here feature brick cambered heads and brick jambs, with glazing bar sashes that are smaller above.
Inside, the farmhouse boasts a heavily moulded central staircase, panelled doors, and an inner front door with stained glass. The southwest front room includes a dark marble fireplace surround and an ornate iron grate, while the southeast room retains original gilded pelmets and a marble fireplace.
