Description

No 1 Lexden Terrace is the first house of a stuccoed terrace consisting of six houses, built in the 19th century. Each house has three storeys and a basement, with two bays flanked by giant Ionic pilasters on the upper two floors, which rise from a band over the ground floor. There is an extra pilaster between houses 5 and 6. The terrace features a full entablature with a moulded cornice and parapet, slate roofs, and brick chimneys. The upper floors have twelve-pane sash windows, while the ground floor openings are not aligned; there is a door to the left and a tripartite sash window to the right, which has an unusual glazing pattern of marginal panes surrounding an elongated octagon.

The entrance is accessed by a flight of steps flanked by wrought-iron railings with scroll design uprights at each doorway. The stuccoed shouldered doorcases have cornices, and the doors consist of two long panels with overlights featuring tracery similar to that of the ground floor window.

To the right, there is a recessed addition linking to No 7 Rock Houses, along with a low screen wall that has two arches—one is blank and the other contains a Gothic panelled door.

The rear elevation is painted stucco with a parapet and a continuous first-floor balcony that has decorative cast-iron railings, pierced open-work uprights, and a lead tent awning. There is a lower one-bay link to No 7 Rock Houses that features an arched window on each floor.

The interior is said to be impressive, featuring cantilevered stairs that rise around an elliptical well, which is top lit by a glazed dome, along with panelled doors and window shutters.
