Description
No 3 Lexden Terrace is the third house in a stuccoed terrace of six houses, built in the 19th century. Each house has three storeys and a basement, featuring two bays that are flanked by giant Ionic pilasters on the upper two floors, which rise from a band over the ground floor. There is an extra pilaster between Nos 5 and 6. The terrace has a full entablature with a moulded cornice and a parapet, slate roofs, and brick chimneys. The upper floors have twelve-pane sash windows, while the ground floor openings are not aligned; there is a door to the left and a tripartite sash window to the right with an unusual glazing pattern of marginal panes surrounding an elongated octagon.
The entrance is accessed by a flight of steps, which are flanked by wrought-iron railings featuring scroll-designed uprights at each doorway. The stuccoed doorcases have shouldered shapes with cornices, and the doors consist of two long panels with overlights that have tracery similar to the ground floor window.
The rear elevation is painted stucco and features a parapet along with a continuous first-floor balcony that has decorative cast-iron railings, pierced open-work uprights, and a lead tent awning.
The interior is said to be impressive, featuring cantilevered stairs that rise around an elliptical well, which is illuminated by a glazed dome. It also includes panelled doors and window shutters, among other details.
