Description

Trenewydd is an earlier 19th-century house built on an earlier core. It is constructed of rubble stone with slate roofs and stone end stacks. The main three-window, two-storey range has renewed 12-pane sash windows, with painted brick heads and painted slate sills. The centre window has a raised sill and incorporates a small, hornless, 4-8-4 pane tripartite sash; glazed doors are located below, under an overlight, within an added gabled porch, which has a front Gothic traceried window with a painted brick head. An outshut extends to the rear, along with two later rear wings and a hipped centre stair tower, featuring a pointed traceried stair light.

A lower service range extends to the west, notable for its large west end stack, two large pairs of sashes above, a ground floor Gothic window, and a centre glazed door. Lean-tos are attached to the west end and the rear.

Attached to the northwest is a later 19th-century two-storey outbuilding, with a lean-to coach-house in the angle. The coach-house lean-to has a north end arched entry and a half-hipped gable, while the main part has a (blocked) similar centre entry and a small sash window above. The north end wall features a first-floor small sash window with a blank arch over, and a stone end stack. Outside stone stairs are located at the south end, while the west side has 20th-century windows.

A walled garden is attached to the northeast, enclosed by rubble stone walls.

The entrance hall and stair foot have attractive plasterwork, including inset acanthus leaves to flat brackets, an elliptical arch (panelled with two pairs of brackets supporting each side), and a small rectangular moulded ceiling beyond the foot of the stair. The northeast room features a moulded ceiling border, of Regency style with long panels and rosettes to the centres. Six-panel doors are throughout. The service range has a large timber-lintel fireplace. A lean-to behind houses an ancient oak table-top on stone piers, set on a cobbled floor; the table is said to date back to the 16th century. The northwest rear wing was formerly used as a dairy. The stair has a thin ramped rail, stick balusters, and a thin turned newel. The stair ceiling features a thin moulded cornice, with shallow canted sides to a rectangular centre panel, accented by a cruciform and foliated centre plaster motif. An elliptical arch marks the stair head, and six-panel doors lead to the upper rooms, framed by Regency surrounds. The northwest and centre rooms have moulded ceiling surrounds with rosettes in the corners, while the northeast room has a more elaborate oak-trail surround and a small acanthus cornice. Narrow fireplaces with iron grates are also present.
