Description
Polot House is a mid-19th century former pilot house constructed from coursed slate slabs, featuring an imitation slate roof and a brick stack at the north end. It has a small-scale, one-room plan built into the side of a hill, with outside stairs leading up from the east side to a door at the south end. There is one small window on the east side and another small window at the north end.
Adjacent to the house is a well-preserved circular rubble stone lime-kiln, likely from the early 19th century, built into the side of a bank. This kiln is a typical Dewisland type, characterized by opposed kiln eyes and upper parts that slope in towards stone slab lintels. Curving outside steps on the north side lead up to a flat top that has an infilled crucible.
The property is situated on land that belongs to Henllys farm and is marked on the 1887 Ordnance Survey map as an ‘old limekiln’. It is recognized as one of the best-preserved examples of the numerous coastal limekilns in North Pembrokeshire. The site is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument (Pe 388).
