Description
Ty Mawr in Porthgain is a rectangular structure built from green granite rubble, standing two storeys high. The exterior features large upper windows with cambered heads, with five windows on each side and four on the south end. The sides and south end have broad, low ground floor openings topped with timber lintels. Originally, there was an open lean-to range along the west side and two long low sheds extending south from the south end. The south end has rough stones that are corbelled vertically up to the gable apex, likely intended for a future addition. At the north end, there is a large lean-to built in two stages: the first stage is made of stone with arched doorways at each end, and the second stage is constructed from brick, topped with a single slate roof. These two sections are labeled ‘Engine House’ and ‘Boiler House’ on a 1896 plan, and a remnant of a removed square brick stack can be found at the northeast angle.
