Description

No. 47 Royal Terrace is a terrace house built in 1882, originally for coastguard officers, with an office located at No. 51. The terrace was opened by Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh. It consists of three storeys with stuccoed fronts, which are painted except for Nos 45 and 47, and features slate roofs with six stone chimneys.

The houses from Nos 43 to 49 are two-window wide with doors positioned in the right bay, while No. 51 is three windows wide with a central door. The large sash windows have marginal glazing bars, slate sills, and raised keyblocks. The doorways also feature raised keyblocks, and the original doors were four-panel with arched heads to the panels and traceried overlights above. The door remains on Nos 47 to 49, and the overlight is present on Nos 49 and 51. Each house has a basement.

The front areas are small and enclosed by low squared rubble stone walls topped with cast-iron railings and matching gates. The railings have been removed from Nos 49 and 51, and the gate from No. 49 is also missing.

The rear walls of the houses are four-storey with brick window heads, and there are various additions. A well is located in a rubble stone well-house behind No. 49.
