Description
Connaught House is a terraced house dating from the 18th century, constructed of painted stucco with a slate roof and brick end stacks. It has a basement, four storeys, and an attic, originally designed as a two-window range. A full-height stucco canted bay is located on the left side, and there are single windows above the front door to the right. The majority of the windows are four-pane sashes, although two-pane narrower sashes are found on the sides of the canted bay. Dormers have been added behind the parapet, featuring inset mouldings with rebated angles in sunk panels. The upper two floors have windows with a cambered head within a moulded surround, while arched French windows on the first floor open onto a continuous iron balcony with moulded arched heads, plain fanlights, and pilaster sides. The ground floor features channelled rustication and plain square window and door surrounds. A four-panelled door is accessed via three steps. The first-floor balcony is supported by iron brackets and features attractive iron railings reminiscent of earlier 19th-century designs. Basement windows are sash windows. The rear elevation has stair-windows to the left with coloured glass in the marginal panes, along with hornless, 12-pane sashes in the centre and to the right. The rear also has four storeys and a parapet. The area railings are adorned with fleur-de-lys motifs.
