Description

Style is a farmhouse located on the north side of the road entering Bosherston village from the Pembroke direction, immediately west of the churchyard. It originally served as a tenancy of about 89.1 hectares under the Earl of Cawdor, with records showing it was tenanted by R Hitchings in 1782 and J Benyon in 1839.

The house consists of two distinct periods, facing south. The older section is the eastern unit, which features originally opposed doorways and a very large chimney that protrudes from the gable wall, with the upper part of the stack positioned about 0.3 meters away from the main gable. This section is constructed of rubble masonry and includes two ovens—one located at the rear and another at the side of the hearth—both covered with slate, as well as chimney offsets. Additionally, there is a standard end-chimney centrally located at the apex of the same gable. The windows have been altered compared to those in the later addition, and there is a cobbled front yard.

To the original house, a late 18th-century double-fronted addition was made after the demolition of the western part. This new section features a central panelled door with a canopy supported by brackets and six-pane sash windows that are small and recessed. The front of this addition is hung with small slates, while the rest of the house is finished in painted rubble masonry. The roof is slate-covered, and there is an end chimney on the west side. Some of the floor beams have plain stops to their chamfers.

The central unit of the later house contains the stairs and a small rear cellar. At the back, there is a two-storey extension that runs the full length of the later house and has a lean-to roof. The older part likely replaced a back-kitchen in relation to the new house.

In front, there is a low wall made of rubble masonry enclosing the garden, with a mounting block positioned to the left of the gate. Style is noted for being a well-preserved and attractive 18th-century farmhouse that includes a significant earlier portion with a fine chimney.
