Description
St. Michael and All Angel's Church is located at the northern end of Bosherston village. This church dates back to possibly the 12th century and underwent extensive restoration in 1855 by Lord Cawdor. It features a chancel and nave with north and south transepts, a west tower, and a porch. There is a squint that connects the south transept to the chancel, and a vestry is situated to the north of the chancel.
The exterior showcases original limestone masonry in large blocks and has slate roofs with sprockets at the eaves, which have recently been re-roofed. On the north wall of the nave, there are indications of a lost north porch. The tower is likely later than the nave and has a battered base. It consists of three storeys, with a corbelled parapet adorned with crenellations and louvred belfry openings on all sides. A stair turret at the southeast corner of the tower is also crenellated.
Inside, the nave, tower, transepts, and porch are vaulted. The transepts connect to the nave through pointed arches, while the tower opens directly into the nave. The chancel features a timber roof and a Minton encaustic tile floor that displays the arms of Lord Cawdor. The east window, designed in the Early English style, has three lancets and four slender Purbeck marble columns supporting the inside arches. Stained glass from 1872 commemorates Rev. W Allen. There is a modern oak table and corbels from a former rood beam. A square Norman font has been scraped, and there are 14th-century effigy-tombs located in the transepts. An ogee-headed piscina in the south transept is positioned at a low level, indicating that the floor has been raised by about 0.5 meters.
The church is listed as Grade II* due to its medieval architecture and the notable 19th-century east window.
