Description

The churchyard of the Church of St Brynarch features significant architectural elements, including walls and gates. The south gates consist of blue lias ashlar piers topped with cornices and balls, accompanied by a cast iron gate dated 1823, complete with an iron overthrow. The east end gate may not be in its original location, as it is wider than the current opening and resembles the south gate, also made of cast iron. The northwest gateway includes a stone arch with voussoirs and a keystone, along with an iron gate that has quatrefoil designs on the bottom and mid rails.

Inside the churchyard, there is a notable avenue of yew trees leading to the south porch, and prominently featured are the 10th to 11th century Great Cross, recognized as one of the finest in Wales (Scheduled Ancient Monument Pe 164), and the Vitalianus Stone, which may date to the 5th century and bears the inscription 'Vitaliani' in Latin and Ogham (Scheduled Ancient Monument Pe 151).

The churchyard contains numerous slate headstones and some table tombs from the late 18th and 19th centuries, including the family vault of the Bowens of Llwyngwair. This vault is a rubble-faced embankment with ashlar corner piers and slate plaques, enclosed by a low wall with ashlar piers. Inscriptions commemorate members of the Bowen and Griffiths families. At the end of the churchyard, there is a cross erected in 1908 in memory of "Tegid," Reverend John-Jones, who served as vicar from 1842 to 1852 and was known as a poet and scholar.
