Description
The remains of a grotto are located in the garden of Picton Castle. This structure consists of a mound that contains a vaulted tunnel, with its entrance on the west side. It is believed that a summer house or belvedere originally topped the mound, but this feature has since been lost.
The tunnel measures about 10 meters in length and extends from the west side of the mound into its center. It is situated above the original ground level. The walls and vault of the tunnel are made of rubble masonry, while the floor is composed of earth. The tunnel is nearly 2 meters wide and features a barrel vault. At the eastern end, there is a blocking wall that has been inserted, and the area beyond this wall remains unknown. On either side of the tunnel, there are shallow rounded recesses, three on each side, which appear to have been intended for statues. These recesses are original to the tunnel, which has a groined vault at each recess.
