Description
The raised terrace at the east entrance to Picton Castle is designed to blend into the surrounding land. At the west end, it is bordered by curved retaining walls that extend symmetrically as wings on either side of the main entrance to the Castle. The terrace features similar hammer-dressed masonry to that of the Castle, with the stonework possibly re-used from medieval walls. It has low parapets with overhanging copings. The basement of the Castle extends slightly beneath the terrace. On either side of the entrance, there are curved flights of steps leading down to a lower level. The steps are flanked by round ornamental hammer-dressed masonry piers topped with decorative carved copings, and they also feature carved stone balusters and copings.
