Description
The gates, piers, and railings at the North Entrance Lodges to Picton Castle are notable features from the 19th century. The cast-iron gates are set in a 4-meter wide opening and are cross-braced with spear heads. The piers are rendered and each displays the Philipps crest, featuring a lion rampant with a chained collar. They have a corbelled cornice that matches the corbelled parapets of the lodges and are decorated with chamfered corners and crossed loopholes.
High railings, similar in design to the gates, connect the piers to the lodges, maintaining the same detailing. Additionally, on each side, there are long curved low wing walls that create a spacious forecourt, which is enclosed by low railings that reflect the style of the main railings and gates.
