Description

The Edward Davies Memorial Chemical Laboratories is a two-storey building with a basement at the northwest end, designed in the Wrenaissance style. The façade features 15 windows made of snecked rubble with freestone dressings, an overall parapet, a cornice, and a bolection moulded eaves band. The building has rusticated quoins and a plinth, topped with a slate roof that includes glazed lanterns and a central cupola.

At the center, there is an advanced three-bay frontispiece with rusticated quoins and a semi-circular pediment adorned with shields. A giant cavetto moulded arch rises over the first floor, creating a traceried fanlight. Flanking the central half-glazed French windows, which lead onto a concave iron-railed verandah, are narrow small pane sash windows with splayed inner openings. The raised oval porch is accessed between square piers and features a curved small-pane sash window, panelled doors, and a six-pane fanlight, along with a commemorative brass tablet in the porch. The first floor has oval windows with architraves and leaded glass, while below, 12-pane sash windows are topped with raised cornices and architraves that extend below the cills. The railings over the basements include small pane sash windows.

The three-bay elevations maintain similar detailing, with some blocked windows and a blind niche at the left end. A modern extension from around 1962 is located on the right. The rear elevation is similar, featuring brick window dressings. A large Lecture Theatre, which is parallel to the rear, is two-storey and includes similar detailing, with a two-window northwest end featuring a lantern and a rounded southeast end.

Inside, the building retains a perron staircase with barley twist balusters and an oval balustraded well leading to the first floor landing, which has a top lantern. Groin vaulted passages extend from the entrance hall. The first floor contains five-bay tunnel roofed laboratories for senior and junior students, equipped with Doulton sinks and much of the original furniture. The Museum and Library, presented by Henry Tate in 1896, are also located here. The large Lecture Theatre is acoustically designed with a tunnel vaulted ceiling and raked seating, accompanied by an adjoining preparation room and museum, as well as specialized laboratories in the basement.
