Description

Felin yr Aber is a building made of whitewashed rubble stone with a slate roof, featuring one storey and a loft. It is built into a bank, which allows for a single broad entry to the loft on the north side. The entrance has double ledged doors. The east end includes a loft window with a timber lintel and a broad ground floor door that has a cambered arch, stone voussoirs, and double ledged doors. This end also features a large wheel measuring 3.81 meters, which is unusually wide at 1.22 meters, likely dating from the late 19th century. Above this, there is a pair of casement windows.

On the south side, there are casement pair windows on each floor to the left and a broad cambered 9-pane window at the center of the ground floor. The ground floor windows have stone voussoirs.

There is an added southeast kiln-house with a slate roof. The east side has a door to the right leading to the kiln room and a small window on the ground floor to the left, with a slightly larger first floor window above. The south gable features a loft window and additional light in the gable. On the west side, there is one first floor casement pair.

Inside, there is a ground floor pit wheel and a cast-iron crown-wheel with an extra wheel on top to drive a lay-shaft. The machinery is likely from the mid to late 19th century, possibly renewed in the early 20th century. The loft has been updated with 20th century joists and flooring. It contains two mill stones, one marked with the plate "Kay & Hilton Fleet St Liverpool 1856". The loft is supported by three heavy oak roof trusses, which may date from the 18th century, featuring a tie beam and collar, and an arched brace between the second and third trusses with a pulley for a hoist. There is a ledged door in the southeast corner leading to the kiln-house loft, which has a pierced tile drying floor and two pine roof trusses. The kiln room below contains a whitewashed stone kiln with a recessed hearth.
