Description

The Black Lion Hotel, including the service range to the left, is a large inn and coaching hotel built in stucco with a slate hipped roof that has deep eaves. It features two prominent rendered stacks that are concealed by a 20th-century fascia. The building is three storeys high with a five-window main range arranged in a 1-3-1 bay pattern, and a lower two-storey service wing to the left. This service wing, along with No 13 High Street, creates a nearly symmetrical overall appearance.

The main front of the hotel has a wall face that slightly projects for the outer window bays and includes two broad bands: one at the first-floor sill level and another between the upper floors, extending across the three-window centre. There are five square six-pane attic windows with slate sills, three twelve-pane sash windows at the first floor with slate sills, and outer tripartite sashes with a 4-12-4 pane configuration set in arched recesses that continue down to the ground floor. The ground floor was altered in the late 19th century, featuring projecting square bay windows in the centre and outer bays, with twelve-pane sashes in between. Historical photographs suggest that there were originally sashes where the bay windows now are, and doors where the sashes currently exist. The centre three windows are located in arched recesses.

The service range to the left has four windows, a projecting gable on the left, a large rendered stack on the roof slope, and a significant stone stack at the eastern end. The gable, which matches that of No 13, features fretted bargeboards, quoins, and a two-storey arched recess with a tripartite sash window on the first floor, similar to those on the main range. However, the ground-floor window has been replaced by a 20th-century glazed entry. Between the main range and the service wing, there is a carriage arch with large wooden gates, above which is a twelve-pane sash window, and to the left is a two-window range of twelve-pane sashes, with a larger window below.

The interior has been altered, except for the staircase, which retains stick balusters and a moulded rail.
