Description

These are a pair of houses, built around 1800 or possibly earlier. They have three floors and three windows each, with a stucco exterior and slate roofs. The rendered chimney stacks rise above the roofs. Number 1, on the right and known as Buckingham House, has six-pane windows in the attic, twelve-pane sash windows on the first floor (though the lower halves of these have been replaced with plate glass), and a pair of late 19th-century canted bay windows on the ground floor, covered by a lean-to slate roof. A central door and overlight provide access. The rear of the building is of rubble stone, with a two-storey lean-to addition and a north-east wing containing a large stone chimney stack at the end. Inside Number 1, the roof structure comprises cruck roof trusses, which have been joined together, suggesting a construction date of around 1800 or earlier; however, it might be a later example of this type of roof. Number 2, on the left, has modern windows with small panes throughout, a central door and overlight. The rear wall is of rubble stone and shows a straight joint with a low, two-storey rear wing extending to the east, and a large stone chimney stack at the end.
