Description
Calderbrooke Lodge is a complex of buildings, incorporating a single-storey main cottage imported from Sweden, with additions of a two-storey hipped kitchen wing to the northeast angle, and a single-storey hipped range to the north, extended further north in the early 20th century. The lodge is a painted timber-frame structure resting on a stone plinth, featuring deep eaved slate hipped roofs and brick stacks.
The south front is panelled with raised planks, with the lower panels vertically-boarded, the main panels horizontally-boarded, and shallow panels under the eaves displaying a row of raised six-pointed stars. Moulded rafter ends are visible beneath the boarded eaves. There are 20th-century casement windows on each side, originally with blind boxes, and a central hipped porch, raised on four steps. The porch was originally open, supported by chamfered timber piers, but now contains glazing on each side of the entry and to the sides. Original fretwork panelling remains below the windows. The main door is a six-panel design with stained glass top panels. The east side of the lodge is windowless. The west side has the roof extending over a projecting central bay, containing two large windows (currently under restoration) and a single light with a top light to each side, along with a brick stack on the roof slope. The rear north side features one window similar to those on the front.
The north rear wing mirrors this with similar windows and a brick north stack. The northeast kitchen wing is horizontally boarded in three tall panels below a plank rail and three shallow panels for the upper floor; its south side is blank. The east ground floor has a large casement pair, while the north ground floor features a hipped porch with angle posts, vertical boarding, three four-pane windows to the sides, a single light, a door, and four four-pane windows to the north. Above, two large six-pane sashes break through the plank rail, with stars applied to the boarding below. A brick stack is present on the north wall face.
The interior is exceptionally well detailed, featuring fielded six-panel doors and panelled walls, originally with hessian under the wallpaper and green painted framing. The panels now have exposed horizontal boarding; one panel is marked “Made in Sweden,” and two signatures of painters from 1903 are visible. A room to the left of the entry passage has a north-facing fireplace with a grate and hand-painted tile cheeks, while a room to the right contains a fireplace that formerly served an east chimney. The northwest room has a south-facing fireplace. A corridor turns at a right angle towards the east end kitchen wing, with narrow stairs leading to a servants' bedroom floor above. Off the passage to the north is a fourth main room, seemingly lengthened to the north, along with smaller utility rooms.
