Description
Gwernant Farmhouse and attached farm ranges form a four-sided farm court. The core of the farmhouse appears to date from the 18th century, with substantial additions and alterations in the 20th century. The eastern range is formal and near-symmetrical, comprising a two-storey hipped range with a prominent tower over a central archway. The tower is square, featuring a large incised cross on its front face; the arms of the cross end in small roundels, with the upper one being open as a dove-entry and topped with an asbestos pyramid roof. A large round archway with sandstone voussoirs is at ground floor level. The farmhouse itself is located to the left, with a slate roof, stone ridge stack, and originally a two-window range, though 20th-century glazing now occupies the lower windows which have stone voussoirs. A similar range to the right has a plain tile roof, a blank ground floor window on the left, and windows with boarding or rough glazing.
The courtyard includes the tower with a louvred window and a row of dove holes under the eaves, mirroring the large round arch. The interior of the tower is open to the roof. A two-bay cart-shed with round arches, stone voussoirs, and a loft light is situated to the left, while the whitewashed farmhouse to the right has 20th-century ground floor windows, with the first-floor window potentially in its original position. A northern range of the court extends with a rear wing to the farmhouse which is largely 20th century, incorporating an outshut to the courtyard. A gap separates this from a low range of cowsheds with an asbestos roof, exhibiting a door, metal window, a door, three blocked windows with higher sills, a window, a door and another blocked window.
The south front of the farmhouse has a two-storey, four-bay range with 20th-century windows, with the left side raised in the 20th century. The west range, facing the entry, has a large hipped plain tile roof above a barn on the right and a lofted loose box on the left. The west range features a ground floor cambered-headed broad entry centrally, with stone steps to the right which block a window. Steps lead to a loft door with a small window to the right and a larger window to the far left. The right side displays a tall cambered-headed barn opening and a window with stone voussoirs. The south range is no longer joined to the west range; a stub wall marks the location of a former archway, with blockwork in the west gable. It includes a door flanked by loops and a slate roof. A taller range to the right has an asbestos roof, incorporating a ground floor stable, a window, a door and a window, alongside an arched cart entry in the angle of the eastern range.
The west range has an eight-bay roof to the barn, with bolted collar trusses. A low door is at the rear, and a window is at the north end. A six-bay loft is located over the left section, with two blocked doors leading into the north range. The north range’s west end has a five-bay roof with tie-beam trusses; the upper end has a two-bay cart-shed open to the rear. The south range boasts a later rafter roof to the loft floor, and an opening to the rear. The east range features a five-bay loft over the cart-shed, with bolted trusses.
